The Department of Veterans Affairs has recently expanded its vocational rehabilitation services to include a specialized program- Supported Employment. This unique program offers an opportunity for veterans who have experienced the ups and downs of serious mental illness to find and maintain competitive employment in the community. The Supported Employment program uses an individual placement model. This is evidenced based practice and is supported by research to be an effective tool in assisting persons with severe and persistent mental illness obtain and retain competitive work. Supported Employment utilizes a "place-train" approach. The individual must be registered with the VA system as eligible for treatment. This vocational program is one component of the individual's mental health treatment. Vocational services are integrated with mental health providers. Attention is paid to consumer preferences. Competitive employment is the goal. There are continuous and comprehensive assessments, as well as time-unlimited supports, including benefits counseling. |
